PUE: Power Usage Effectiveness

The PUE value is a benchmark used in data centres to evaluate the efficiency of energy use. The PUE value indicates the ratio of the total energy consumed by a data centre to the energy actually used for IT equipment such as servers, storage systems and network devices. 

 It is calculated by dividing the total energy consumption of the data centre by the energy consumption of the IT equipment. A PUE value of 1 would be ideal, as this would mean that all the energy consumed is used directly for the operation of the IT hardware, with no losses for cooling, lighting or other non-IT related infrastructure. The higher the PUE value, the more inefficient the data centre is in terms of its energy use.
